This month we are focusing on the benefits of Virgin Organic Unrefined Sunflower Oil and the effects of food-grade Sunflower as a healthy massage oil for the body. First a short review of our last Newsletter.
Massage/Bodyworkers and those using oils in other healing practices may use large amounts of oil in their daily work. The quality of the oil you use can affect your health even more than your client. A client may have only one or two ounces of oil applied to their skin during the average massage, once a week. A practitioner, on the other hand, may use as much as 14 ounces a day. At least half of the oil used for each client is absorbed by the practitioner!
How much oil do you absorb? Studies now show that as much as 60% of what you use is absorbed through the skin, then the vital organs, especially the liver! The more heated the workspace and your body, the greater the absorption rate! If you use steam or heating pads the absorption rate is even greater.
Each and every one of our cells is surrounded by a protective barrier of phospholipids. This natural protective barrier consisting of cis-fatty acids is damaged by both trans-fatty acids (processed oils and foods) that we eat and more importantly by trans-fatty acid and acrylimides (high heat process that turns oil into plastic) we absorb through our skin from refined and “partially refined oils.”
The good news is that if the oil you use is Certified Organic and Virgin 1st Pressing, unrefined and preservative free, you and your client may actually feel better, have more energy and be healthier from its use when you work! Use of these pure food-grade oils for massage can actually heal and rebalance the body at the cellular level. Many health problems such as chronic fatigue, liver imbalances, headaches, skin rashes and hormonal imbalances can actually be brought back into harmony.
Our skin, being the largest organ of the body, breathes, processes light, excretes and absorbs as well as defends. The chemical content in the oils we use must be processed by our liver. That is approximately 14 ounces of oil on a daily basis, 70 ounces a week for most full-time massage/bodyworkers. This amount of oil can be overwhelming and taxing to our immune system and liver if the oil used is not in the purest form available.
First pressing, virgin unrefined oils (because they are completely pure) naturally carry significant essentials oils necessary for vitality and health. They have a full complement of anti-oxidants and are a virtual pharmacopeia of vitamins including a, b, c, d, e, k as well as zinc, calcium, potassium and magnesium to help protect and secure cellular integrity. Perhaps most important is that there are no trans-fatty acids in unrefined oils. (not speaking of added trans-fats but rather trans-fats that occurs during the process of deodorization, a high heat evaporation method.)
Truly cold-pressed oil means that the seed or nut was pressed in small controlled batches and that temperatures did not exceed body temperature (80 F) at any step of the preparation process. Cold-pressed is safe only when pressed in small batches. Larger commercial batches would be correctly called expeller-pressed as friction from grinding can raise the temperature to nutrient damaging levels, even though they are not actually processing the oil. Still, expeller-pressed, heat sensitive nutrients such a vitamins b, c, phenols for reducing pain, phyto-sterols and chlorophyll are damaged and begin to breakdown along with vital anti-oxidants.
Remember that unrefined oils smell just like the seed or nut from which they came. No smell means that the oil has been refined regardless of what the label states. The refining process removes all living essentials, colors, phyto-nutrients, vitamins, minerals, phospholipids and essential oils. This is done to increase the shelf-life of the oil and to harvest important chemicals inherent in the oil. One of these commonly harvested chemicals is oleic acid. Oleic acid lowers cholesterol and has the quality of absorption in an oil. The cost of refinement renders an oil depleted of all nutrient value, but most importantly, the heat involved in refinement creates dangerous acrylimides or plastics. This is also why trans-fats or hydrogenated oils are so dangerous to our well-being and, they are found in all processed foods from the cereals we eat to the oils and lotions we apply to our body, even trans-dermal patches.
Here are the 12 qualities of oil used for both food, medicine and massage. The US Labeling laws are not presently requiring this full level of disclosure on oil labels as does Europe.

Certified Organic oils are many times refined! How did we find out this information? We called the refineries ourselves! We also questioned well known organic companies producing foods and oils and found that they used organic partially processed oils. Many times, doing your own research is necessary when sketchy labeling leaves you with questions. How many times have you seen a label that has naturals flavor as an ingredient? In calling the company that makes the item, which we did, we found out that is covers everything from MSG to annatto, both of which can cause migraines.
Partially refined oils have been deodorized, the single most damaging process in the oil refinement process! This process takes place at 450-500 degrees for at least 30-45 minutes, until all living essentials and colors are evaporated. (convection ovens are used with extremely high steam heat) Companies do this for increased shelf-life resulting in better financial profits and to give oils a flat neutral oil base to suite their buyers’ specific needs. This processed and partially processed oil is used in cereals, baked goods and processed foods. Fully refined oils are used for cosmetics, soaps, shampoos, lotions, hormone and nicotine patches, some medicines and most massage oils.
We are addressing this issue because massage/bodyworkers use a much greater amount of oil in their daily practice than the average person does in two to three months. Also, the ultimate nutrient cost of oil refinement yields oil so nutrient deficient, that is can pose a health risk. This is especially so when working with clients who have medical issues. An example of this would be the client with heart and or other cardiovascular issues. They need to watch their LDL or bad cholesterol levels in their blood. Using the right oil can help them. Processed oil has dangerous acrylimides which translate as trans-fatty acids and plaque buildup in the arteries of the body.
Your healthy, organic unrefined carrier oil, can offer an overall, healthier outcome for your client. In the case of cardiovascular issues, mixing the following two great oils can be even more beneficial. Use one part unrefined Sunflower oil, highest in polyunsaturates, with one part unrefined Avocado oil, the oil highest in the elastin, especially important for healthy cardiac tissue.
Each carrier oil has a specific purpose or strength and when the oil is natural and unprocessed, it can be a proverbial pharmacopeia of healing for both client and practitioner.
Nature made these precious oils to recharge our body and to feed and protect our vital organs. As massage/bodyworkers, perhaps we should go by this simple rule regarding oils, "If you can’t eat it, don’t use it."
Sunflower, according to the Native American, was a microscopic version of the Sun and our Galaxy. As such it was sacred to them and used in many healing ceremonies. It is said, by its signature, to signify the spine and the brain thereby governing the whole of our body systems. Sunflower is viewed as a Master Healing Oil for it blends into and augments all oils to which it is added.
In India, it is the Lotus that has the title of the Master Carrier oil. Here, just as with Sunflower, the Lotus represents the fullness of the cosmos in its multi-faceted flower. In ancient times oil was worth more than gold for it was the essence of life and 'THE healing medium' as well as being one of nature’s greatest and most abundant gifts. Perhaps soon we will all rediscover the healing stories and purposes of precious concentrated oils.
In studying the gifts of Sunflower oil we learned that in Europe, it is actually illegal to refine Sunflower Oil. This law, protecting virgin Sunflower Oil, seems deeply rooted in the culture and reveals a respect for the unique properties this oil.
When a carrier oil and essential oil are from the same genetic family and are combined, a unique synergy occurs! Here the combination of essential and carrier oil augment each other’s healing properties, through their like genetic signature, creating a more vital medium.
Here are some of the essential plants belonging to the same family as Sunflower: Artemisia, Artichoke, Aster; Calendula, Chamomile, Chicory, Chrysanthemum, Cosmos; Dandelion, Daisy; Echinacea; Goldenrod; Marigold; Ragweed; Safflower; Tagetes, Tansy, Tarragon; Yarrow, Zinnia. Example: Using chamomile essential in Sunflower oil enhances the chamomile essential. You’ll notice that more of the chamomile essences will open and flower due to the augmenting qualities of the Sunflower. They are, after all, genetic relatives.
Sunflower lowers cholesterol, and has the highest poly-unsaturated level of any oil. The chemical list and its remedies are impressive, but perhaps it is to be expected, after all it is named after the Sun and our Galaxy.
Over 259 chemicals are found in Virgin Sunflower Oil. We have listed 50 of the more common and important chemical values to watch for when selecting a carrier for your practice. At present, the US Labeling laws are not at this level of disclosure. In the list below you will find that each chemical has listed, after it’s’ name, an explanation of its protective or healing purposes.
USE of the List: The first chemical on the list is ALANINE. To understand what Alanine is we only have to look at its healing descriptive: Anti-oxidant and Cancer-preventative. In reading the chemical name and what it does for the body we can begin to learn the overall healing effect Sunflower can have for our client. This will also help you chose which carrier is better for which client. For example, Sunflower has the highest amount of polyunsaturated oil and excels in supporting cardiovascular health.
There is an immense difference in the chemicals present in Sunflower before refinement and after refinement! Chemicals listed below are reflective of Unrefined, Non-GMO, Cold-pressed Sunflower Oil. Once Sunflower oil is refined 99% of all of these chemicals are removed! (Journal of American Chemistry, European Journal of Lipid Science and Technology)
There are over 259 chemicals that make up the nutrient healing base of Sunflower Seed oil. Here below are 50 of the components found in Unrefined Sunflower oil. After each vitamin or nutrient listed you will find the percentage value of the said chemical and the meaning of that nutrient by virtue of its affect upon the body. Chemicals and essentials, highlighted in red, are key fatty acids. Chemicals without percentages are trace amounts.
