THE BASIC TOOL OF MASSAGE PRACTITIONERS
is "their oil," just as an artist has his brushes and
a doctor his instruments. When that oil is unprocessed, unrefined
and filtered only, our massage work then becomes a nutritional
healing experience that can actually enhance our health and the
well being of our clients. For our health, perhaps the rule of
thumb should be, “If you can’t eat it, don’t
use it."

>HOW DO I KNOW IF
AN OIL IS REALLY SAFE?
Oils that are not processed, in any way, will have their original vibrant
color and unique fragrance. *The process to remove color and essentials
from an oil, called deodorization, requires a temperature of at least
450 degrees. Trans fatty acids begin forming as low as 280-325 degrees.
(one of the main causes of high cholesterol) Free radicals form when
temperature rises over 350 degrees. *Trail and error are the best ways
to find your healing oil as many organic oils are even processed through
deodorization which causes dangerous free radicals to form. The absence
of heat in oil preparation is the greater safety measure. If an oil has
no color and specifically no smell, even if it is organic, it is processed
by deodorization.
HOW DO I KNOW IF
I HAVE AN UNPROCESSED TRANS FATTY ACID & FREE RADICAL FREE
OIL?
The key will be color and signature fragrance! Sunflower oil will smell
just like sunflower seeds. Apricot oil is rich gold and smells like fruit
and roses. Each oil has a different level of Linoleic acid (vitamin E,
thins blood) and of Oleic acid (level of absorption). Essential fatty
acids, found in unprocessed oils, feed our vital organs, lower cholesterol,
reduce inflammation and contain important chemicals like GLA to rejuvenate
our skin and enhance our immune system. As you may know, trans-fatty
acids and free-radicals are interpreted, in the body as bad cholesterol.
This means that even a good oil like olive oil which is high in essential
fatty acids and omega acids, if it were heated above 350-375 degrees,
would begin transforming into dangerous free-radicals.

HOW ARE OILS DIFFERENT?
WHICH DO I USE FOR MY CLIENTS?
An oils purpose, “indication and contraindications” are unfortunately
overlooked in our schools. Here is an example: If your client is a hemophiliac,
any oil that thins their blood could cause bleeding. In this case, a
massage therapist should avoid dangerous thinning oils like grapeseed
oil and canola (hybridized rapeseed from the mustard family), safflower
and passion seed oil. Another example: If your client suffers from PMS
or is menopausal using an oil with high GLA content could bring them
great relief from mood swings, water retention, sweats and irritability.
The primary base oil highest in GLA is pumpkin seed oil. Imagine the
difference it would make to massage someone in an oil that would actually
help physically balance their endocrine system.
DOES OIL ABSORB INTO
THE SKIN?
Absolutely! Our skin is Oil-loving. How much does it absorb? Depending
on the oils “oleic acid content” from 35%-60%. Remember that
all dermal patches applied to the skin, like hormonal or nicotine patches,
are delivered into the body by a concentrated amount of “oleic
acid”, the primary acid in all massage oils. Knowing the oleic
acid content of the base oil you use is vital and basic education regarding
your primary tool, your oil. Heat, moisture and friction raise the absorption
percentages significantly. Note: Our skin is water resistant and oil
receptive.
IS MY COLD PRESSED
OIL REALLY COLD-PRESSED?
The laws in the US regarding trans fatty acids and free radicals in oils
are almost non-existent. Europe has laws in place which require oil that
is sold for consumption, to expose the trans fatty acid levels and whether
the oil has been “further treated since purchase.” This is
the snag. Manufacturers can buy cold-pressed oils and can sell them as
such even though, upon receiving said cold-pressed oils, they further
treated them for cosmetics, and foods so that they will have longer shelf
lives, some up to 2 years.
HOW DO I KNOW IF
AN OIL HAS BEEN FURTHER TREATED?
An unprocessed, cold-pressed oil that is “filtered only” will
have a rich golden, green, red, orange or yellow color, and will
be highly fragrant. If your oil is “color-free and fragrance free” it
has been altered, even if it is organic.
WHAT DOES THE TERM “WHITE
OIL” MEAN?
White oil in the oil industry means “dead oil.” This means
that all life, enzymes, minerals, essentials, vitamins, color and fragrance
have been removed. When all living material is removed the oil is called “inert” though
it will now have dangerous trans fatty acids and free radicals. These
processes are done to increase self life to as much as two years. This
is what is commonly called the “carrier oil.”
WHAT IS THE SHELF
LIFE OF A LIVING BASE?
Your unprocessed, filtered only massage oils, should be considered food
quality. When they are not in use, refrigerate them or at least keep
them out of direct sunlight in a cool place. Unprocessed, untreated,
filtered-only organic oils will stay stable six months to one year in
a cool place or refrigerated. This will ensure that their vitamins, minerals,
and pain relieving properties stay vital and continue to contribute to
your health.
